Hiding in Plain Sight: How to Spot the Signs of Drug Use

When it comes to youth drug prevention, one of the most important tools a parent or guardian can have is awareness—knowing what to look for and where to look. Recognizing the signs of drug use can be more subtle than you might think. For many families, drugs and paraphernalia may be hiding in plain sight, especially in bedrooms or backpacks of middle and high school students.

The Power of Early Conversations

Daisy White, a social worker at Superior High School, emphasizes the importance of open communication at an early age.

“Just being able to have those open conversations, but also having those boundaries in place so that your child knows that you will be looking—or that you may look,” said White. “Just having that conversation so they can come and tell you if they get into something like that.”

Creating a safe space for your child to talk, while also setting expectations and boundaries, can go a long way in helping prevent substance use.

About the “Hiding in Plain Sight” Event

Held at both Superior High School and Superior Middle School, the Hiding in Plain Sight event is a hands-on, educational experience designed to help parents and caregivers identify everyday items that may be camouflaging drug use.

The display features a mock-up of a teen’s bedroom, highlighting objects that can conceal drugs or paraphernalia. From water bottles with hidden compartments to seemingly harmless personal care items, the goal is to help adults see what they may otherwise overlook.

Understanding Peer Pressure

According to Sarah White, Drug-Free Community Coordinator for the Douglas County Drug Prevention Coalition, peer pressure continues to be a leading factor in youth substance use.

“I think just teaching kids early on to say no is a really great thing and to support each other in that decision,” said White. “Peer pressure is really hard. That’s one of the biggest things.”

Helping youth build confidence and understand that saying no is not only okay—it’s powerful—can have a lasting impact.

Next Event and More Resources

The Hiding in Plain Sight exhibit will be back at Superior High School and Middle School next Tuesday. If you’re a parent, educator, or caregiver in the community, this is a great opportunity to get involved and better understand how to protect and support our youth.
